We typically stay at Sheraton and SPG family hotels because we have the Starwood Preferred Guest credit card. However, the Four Points by Sheraton in Lexington was booked for the night we needed and we had to find another option. I pulled up Expedia to see what I could find that was a decent price, but also nice.
Expedia had a super low secret fair for select 3 star hotels. I wouldn’t normally book a hotel that I don’t know the name of before paying, but we decided “what the heck” and tried it out. The hotel was the Clarion Hotel and it had pretty decent reviews. The rate was $40 for the night plus taxes, which came out to about $60. We felt it was definitely a good value at that rate.
We had a room with two doubles. Surprisingly, the beds were memory foam and incredibly comfortable. The room featured a flat screen and a small table and two chairs. It also had a mini-fridge and microwave. The bathroom was pretty typical. I’ve found that hotels really show their age in their bathrooms, as that is the most expensive of a hotel to upgrade. Nevertheless, it wasn’t bad at all, just a typical, small hotel bathroom. I had noticed online that the reviews of the hotel were that it was old and in need of renovation. I found that it wasn’t too bad at all, especially for the price we paid and parking was free.
The other aspect of the hotel that we really found cool was the “Fun Dome.” The Fun Dome features a huge indoor swimming pool, whirlpool, sauna, gym, video arcade and basketball court. There was also a basketball goal in the back parking lot area. There was also a snack bar, but it was not open at the time.
The hotel is conveniently located near the Kentucky Horse Park, just about 8 miles away. There is a restaurant called Cortland’s Southern Kitchen and sports bar, The Sports Page, on site, but there’s also a convenience store and Denny’s within the same parking lot area. Just a quick drive away is a Cracker Barrel and another convenience store.
