We had a spectacular weekend for the 4th, but there were a few tips that I wanted to share for anyone planning a visit.
One is that although you would think there are fireworks shows all over the lake, there’s really not that many. One reason for that this year was the fire ban that Wood County passed just days before the 4th. Other counties in the area also passed them, so you were not allowed to shoot fireworks on your property.
So, if you’re looking for a fireworks show, then look to the various resorts around the lake. We live near Hideaway Harbor, an RV park and campground located on County Road 1988, just off of County Road 1970. They put on a great show this year and if you were on the water, you could watch the show from the lake. Or you could watch the show from your golf cart like we did, as well as many of the other residents and visitors. The show feature professional fireworks and even a little karaoke before and after the show.
Unfortunately, my camera batter died just before the show, so I didn’t get many good shots.
The other fireworks show we found we drove to Mineola for. Each year Mineola has a “Freedom Fest” that they hold the day of the 4th at the Mineola Convention Center. This year they had water slides and slip and slides for the kids and wristbands were just $5 for all of the slides. They also had concession stands. However, although we planned to go to this event, we were eating dinner at Ranchero’s and discovered that their parking lot was the perfect place to watch the show and avoid too much traffic. We watched the show from there and had an excellent view of their fireworks show as well.
